Tax ID Number?
I finished up at the gym this morning and was heading home, but then I remembered my new 1.5 terabyte hard drive was waiting patiently for me at the mail store.
OK, now on with my point. While driving it popped into my head that I should bring up the subject of whether or not voiceover talent should submit their Tax ID or Social Security number when clients request a 1099. I believe I wrote a post on this a couple of years ago, but since it came to mind, perhaps someone out there is not aware:
NEVER give your Social Security number out...if you don't have a Tax ID or TIN, get one today! This way, you are not leaving yourself vulnerable to identity theft. If you go to the IRS web site, you can find out more about the EIN or TIN (not sure what they call it now). The IRS phone number is 800-829-4933. I told them I didn't want my Social Security number left vulnerable and they went ahead and issued me an EIN.
Little Tip: Each New Year I download the 1099 form for that year and fill it out and sign. Then I scan the completed form back into my computer as a .pdf. Now, when the client or their accounting folks ask for a 1099, I'm able to immediately email it over...saving time and hassle.
