Lemon Potion #9

Allergies, YUCK.  Spring time is commonly thought of as "allergy time", but for my house, it hits us harder around October.  For someone who provides for his family by the use of his voice, allergies and gunk that gets on my vocal chords (making me want to clear my throat every 2 minutes) causes very counter productive consequences.  My voice tone will change a bit if I keep clearing  my throat and coughing...your's does too!

So, one day my wife told me about a little "home remedy" that a singer friend uses all the time.  When she told me what it was, I could understand part of the concoction but the other left me baffled.  Check it out:

Amounts shown here may need tweaking in your kitchen, but...

1 Cup warm water
1-2 Teaspoons Lemon Juice Concentrate
1 Teaspoon of Sugar or Honey to counter the bitterness

So, I get the "lemon juice" portion, as this would obviously cut the yuck off your vocal chords and give you the feeling of a clear throat that you only get otherwise by coughing or doing uhhh ummmms till the cows come home...then, while the cows may come home, my voice will have departed.  The added sweetness puzzled me because I'd think it would nullify the affects of the lemon juice.  NOT SO!  The honey is soothing to the throat and the combination is an absolute home-run for me.

Thus, when I have drainage in my throat from allergies etc., I create a little "Lemon Potion #9" in my sink...then head upstairs to the studio in full confidence that victory is mine...with my little "Lemon Potion #9".
